Proud Heritage- Exciting Future- 2011 marks the major milestone of 150 years of dedicated service to America's military and their families. The Armed Services YMCA mission to support the military began in 1861 when a handful of YMCA volunteers provided relief services to Civil War soldiers. For 150 years, the ASYMCA's programming has adapted to the ever changing needs of our Armed Services by providing support and services where the need is greatest: to junior soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen and their families. The ASYMCA continues to enrich the quality of life and resiliency of our service members and their families by providing educational, recreational, social and religious support services across the nation.
ASYMCA of Honolulu was awardeed the 2011 Raytheon Program Achievement Award under the category most dramatic/innovative change. The award was given in recognition of the Parent Participation Preschool program which has been met with huge success. The success of the program is most evident in its recent expansion to all branches of ASYMCA Honolulu and through the implementation of an advanced phase. Stan Lum, Executive Director, accepted the award at a banquet in Alexandria, VA, along with an award check of $4500. Upon his return, Mr. Lum, presented the plaque to Ms. Elizabeth Bynum, Education Director, responsible for the positive change.
On September 11, 2010, President Barack Obama volunteered with Greater DC Cares volunteers and over 80 other volunteers as part of a volunteer service project to remember those lost on September 11. This service project took plact at the Ron Brown Middle School in Washington, D.C. President Obama participated in this service project by painting a portion of the room and commending our Kid Comfort quilters. Photos of the President and our quilters are below.

Mr. Obama mingles with the quilters as they make quilts for Operation Kid Comfort at Ron Brown Middle School as a part of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
